What is a private label product?

Private label products are products that are sold under your own brand but manufactured by another company.

You partner up with a private label manufacturer, give them instructions on how to make your product, and then sell it using your own brand name.

In short, you can have your very own product (even a whole private label product line if you want), without having to invest a huge amount of money to set up an entire manufacturing process and infrastructure.

Fun fact: Tesco’s Everyday Value line, IKEA, and Walmart’s Great Value, are some of the most well-known private label products in the world.

Most companies would need massive capital to set up their own factory in order to launch a new product.

So, it’s far cheaper and easier to partner up with a reliable private label manufacturer and sell private label products instead.

What’s the difference between white label and private label products?

Although they may seem similar, private label products have one main advantage over their white-label counterpart.

White label products are sold to many suppliers by the manufacturer, while private label products are exclusively sold to only one supplier

This means that a white labelling t-shirt manufacturer sells its products to many other companies – and if you want to make changes to the t-shirt, you won’t be able to do that.

But if you have a private label business, you can tweak and change your product as you wish.

Want to change your t-shirt’s material to a thicker fabric? Go for it. Or maybe make it longer? No problem.

Selling a mass-produced product can be cheap, but having no say over quality control or possible alterations can work against you too.

If your product doesn’t leave a great impression on a customer, you won’t be able to offer a solution to their complaint, other than to refund their money – and risk receiving negative reviews.

That’s why a private label brand works best for niche markets and products that are custom-made to your own expert specifications.

Is a private label business profitable?

White labeling a generic product can save you more money in the short term, but most profitable products are usually private-labeled.

In order to run a profitable online business, you need to understand the market trends of your own products.

That means that you need to conduct market research at regular intervals and adjust your business model accordingly.

By picking a popular and trending product, you can keep your costs down by buying in bulk.

Don’t forget to address what makes your brand and business special and different from the rest. This will help you hone your product research and makes it much easier to market and sell your products.

How to start your private label brand

As a budding eCommerce retailer, you have settled on the product you want to sell and you’re ready to become a private label business owner.

Now, there are a few things that you need to make sure you understand before you send out those launch emails to family and friends:

  • Pick a niche and find out what’s actually selling. Be sure that you do your product research properly at the start. Analyze keywords that have been used in search engines related to your niche, see how they are trending, and get an idea of who you’re up against in the competition. You also need to know the best sales channels for your target market.
  • Contact manufacturers and get samples. You want to work with the best manufacturer for your needs and product. Don’t settle for just anyone and check all samples that you receive very carefully. Is the standard high enough and you would want to buy the product yourself? Report any faults back to the manufacturer and see if you can start with smaller quantities. You don’t want to be stuck with thousands of products before you know how they’ll sell. Also check what the maximum production capacity is, so you won’t be let down during high-demand seasons.
  • Create a business plan. Include manufacturing costs. While you’re waiting for samples and the rest of your inventory to arrive, you should create a business plan. Include all costs, from manufacturing to shipping and potential import taxes, as well as a detailed fulfillment strategy. This will help to give you an idea of what your profit margins should be, and how your product’s life cycle will look like.
  • Set up your online store. Another thing to do while waiting for your stock to arrive. As a private label seller, you want to pick an easy-to-use eCommerce platform and set up your online store fast. Then it’s time to create some blog posts, email templates, and marketing campaigns with all the brand elements. Don’t publish anything yet, but have it ready for your store’s grand opening.
  • Launch your private label business. It’s go-time! Get ready for your first orders – consider offering prime shipping for the first 50 or 100 new customers for example. Pay attention to your web design and keep optimizing your online store. Spreading the word to attract new customers is exactly what you want to be doing now, so don’t scare them off with a bad landing page. And don’t forget to be on top of customer service at all times.

Remember that it’s unlikely that you will score many sales in your first couple of days or weeks. And that’s totally normal.

Make sure you keep your cool and continue with your marketing efforts – no customer base was built in a day.

If you feel like a particular campaign isn’t working or gaining any traction, switch your approach. Many successful brands have pivoted.

Put in the sweat and hard work, and you will be reaping the rewards of your first 10, 100, and 1,000 sales.

Here’s to you, the next big successful private label brand!

I dont know where to start. I can get money but the endeavor has to work. How to test market with little funds. The product has to be needed or have a new fashion sense like hankerchief, bandana, scarves. Things im not good at.
