Blog

What is a blog?

A blog is a regularly updated, dynamic website. A blog can serve one of two purposes; either to grow a business by sharing information or focusing on an individual subject by being an online journal.

There are many kinds of blogs, from personal journals to political campaigns. A blog can focus on a niche or cover a wide range of topics.

Some common characteristics of a blog:

  • Posts are shown in a reverse chronological order, where the newest ones are placed on top
  • A sidebar next to the main content that features related posts
  • A comment section below all posts where visitors can interact with each other and engage the blog owner

Difference between a blog and a website

A blog is dynamic. It’s a type of website where you regularly update and produce new content.

Static websites, on the other hand, rarely receive updates and are usually a collection of static pages where all the information, once uploaded, stays the same.

That said, the two are not mutually exclusive. Blogs can be part of a static website, just like how Zyro has a Zyro Blog.

What can a blog be used for?

Blogs can be used in several ways:

  • Personal. It can be a personal diary about your life, or topics that interest you.
  • Business. Some companies have blogs on their websites to increase relevancy, trust and give a face to the company. It can also be used to teach customers about products and services.
  • News site. Blogs can be used as an outlet to publish news and latest updates.

How to start your own blog

Starting your first blog with Zyro is very simple. Here is how you do it:

1. Create a blog website

To create a blog, sign up for Zyro using your email address, Facebook, or Google account. Then choose a fitting template and start customizing it to best reflect your vision.

When it’s time to publish the blog, have a domain name in mind. Your domain is the URL that people use to access your blog, so make sure that it’s short and memorable.

2. Research content ideas for your target audience

Once your blog is ready and you have a niche in mind, you should do some keyword research. Or, if you want to create a personal blog, find something that you enjoy writing about.

Google is a great place to start researching keywords, but there are other places to try.

Quora is an excellent example of a forum where people share questions and others answer them. Check Twitter and Facebook as well to see the latest trends.

3. Learn about SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can boost your rank on search engines. A high ranking gives you more exposure and allows visitors to find your blog easily.

Thankfully, Zyro websites are SEO optimized as standard. You can also edit the title, meta description, alternative text for images, and slugs.

4. Write your content

When you get started blogging, remember to be genuine and honest. Be as informative as possible, and update your blog regularly.

Don’t forget to reply to comments; engagement with visitors is a great way to increase the number of followers you have.

5. Promote your content

Use social media channels to market your blog. Post Instagram Stories, or create a YouTube channel to gain more traction. There are even forums that you can get involved with to promote your blog.

If you have an extra budget, online ads are a great option as well. Some recommended platforms are Facebook Ads, Instagram Ads, and Google AdSense.

6. Track your blog stats

Zyro has Google Analytics integration in order to track all your important stats and data. With this tool, you can improve the way you run your blog.

Search for the pages that gain the most and least amount of traffic, and optimize them with better SEO or more CTAs as needed.

Do bloggers make money blogging?

While some bloggers blog just for fun, many have made a career out of it.

If you want to start a blog and make it a platform for business opportunities, here are some monetization options:

  • Advertisement. Open up space on your blog for people to advertise their content. This can be in the form of pop-ups or a microsite dedicated to advertisements.
  • Affiliate marketing. Promote a company’s product with your link, and if a customer uses your link, you earn sales.
  • Selling your own products, be it physical or digital goods.
  • Memberships. Create exclusive content that can only be accessed by paid users.
  • Paid promotions. Companies will pay you to write a blog post about their products or services.
